Clinical Governance

Clinical governance was introduced into the NHS in the 1990s and is a system through which patient service organisations are accountable for continuously improving the quality of their services and safeguarding high standards of care.

There are five key themes which underpin clinical governance all of which are central to our clinical governance processes:

  • Patient focus – recognition of the patient as an individual who should be treated with respect and dignity. Ensuring that the patient has a voice in the services they receive.
  • Information focus – ability to exchange patient related information in a secure and appropriate way following data protection legislation.
  • Quality improvement – continuous improvement to ensure the effective and safe delivery of services to improve the patients experience.
  • Staff focus – training and support to ensure that the service is delivered by skilled and compassionate people.
  • Leadership – qualified and accountable leadership team ensuring quality services.
