Staying Safe in Hot Weather When You Use Oxygen
Hot weather can make it harder to manage your health. After the recent heatwaves across the UK, there may be more hot weather on the way.
We’ve put together some simple tips to help you stay well and keep your oxygen equipment safe during warm weather.
Looking After Your Oxygen Equipment
When it’s hot, try to spend time in the shade when you’re outside. Plan your day to avoid spending long periods in direct sunlight. This can help stop your oxygen equipment from getting too hot.
Oxygen Cylinders
Store oxygen cylinders in a cool, well-ventilated place.
Do not store them in places that can become very hot, such as conservatories or vehicles.
Oxygen Machines
Keep your oxygen machine in a cool room with plenty of fresh air.
Open windows and doors where possible to help air move around the machine.
If your oxygen machine starts to alarm, switch it off and use your back-up oxygen cylinder. Call us straight away on 0800 373580.
Important: Never leave oxygen cylinders or oxygen equipment in a vehicle, conservatory or other area that can become very hot.
Protect Yourself from the Sun
It’s important to protect yourself from the sun, even on cloudy days.
Too much sun can damage your skin and eyes. It can also cause heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
Wear sunglasses with UV protection and a wide-brimmed hat to shade your face, neck and ears.
If you use oxygen, speak to your pharmacist about a sunscreen that is safe to use with oxygen.
The Hottest Part of the Day
From May to October, the sun is usually strongest between 11am and 3pm.
If possible, stay indoors or in the shade during these hours.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking enough fluids is very important, especially in hot weather.
Try to drink regularly throughout the day. Most people should aim for six to eight glasses of fluid each day.
If you have been told to limit how much you drink, speak to your healthcare professional for advice.
