National Apprenticeship Week 2024 – James

6th February 2024

Transformation Manager James is a highly respected member of the Baywater Healthcare team. Before commencing his current role, James had several positions at the company spanning over thirteen years, showcasing his desire to develop his knowledge and skillset. We spoke to James about how his apprenticeship is meeting his ambitious personality.

You are undertaking a continuous improvement apprenticeship. Can you explain what your apprenticeship is?

My apprenticeship is a combination of Lean and Six Sigma. Lean and Six Sigma aim to drive continuous improvement within a company. I am working towards a level 5 qualification to gain a Lean Six Sigma black belt.

Lean Six Sigma is a team-focused approach that seeks to improve performance by eliminating waste and defects.

What made you want to undertake this course?

There are several reasons. First and foremost, I am eager to learn. You don’t know what you don’t know!

Furthermore, this qualification will further enhance my skill set, which will also support my role as Transformation manager. I want to learn more tools and techniques to drive improvements at Baywater Healthcare.

How will the skills you are developing be used in the workplace and your role at Baywater?

Although I still have about 25% of my apprenticeship left to complete, I have started applying some of the methods and techniques to my role.

I am also completing a project as part of my role which is applicable and will benefit the business. As part of my Level 5 qualification, I also support my colleagues undertaking the Level 4 qualification with training and advice.

Each of us is completing a project relevant to each of our roles to start driving continuous improvement.

What advice would you give to anybody considering undertaking an apprenticeship?

Do your research, make sure you understand the commitment required, length of time, how many hours you need to complete each week and establish your support network.

The best advice I can give you is to enjoy it. An apprenticeship is a great way to upskill and further your development.
